The first step to becoming a PADI professional is taking the Divemaster Course. Once you've become a Divemaster and have the prerequisite number of dives, you may enroll in the PADI IDC.
Bent current conducts all his courses through Sea Fun Divers, a PADI 5-Star CDC Center with two locations here in Phuket; one at Le Meridien Resort and the other at Katathani Resort.
The IDC is divided
into three parts, the Assistant Instructor
(AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor
(OWSI) course. The final part is the Instructor
Examination (IE), which the candidates are
required to pass before they are allowed
to begin teaching. The IE immediately follows
the OWSI course.
The courses are described below. It is
best to take all courses concurrently as
the candidate will be more likely to be
successful during in the IE. If taken together,
the IDC is a total of nine-days and followed
by the IE which takes two-days.
PADI Divemaster Course (DM)
Take the first step in your dive career and become a PADI Divemaster. Working closely with a PADI Instructor, You'll expand your dive knowledge and hone your skills as you become a dive professional. PADI Divemaster training develops your leadership abilities by training you to supervise dive activities and assist instructors with student divers.
What can PADI Divemasters do?
Work at local dive centers, on live-aboard dive boats, yachts and at exotic resort locations
Assist PADI Instructors with students
Lead PADI Scuba Divers on guided dive tours
Teach and certify PADI Skin Divers
Teach PADI Discover Snorkeling programs
Conduct PADI Scuba Review programs for certified divers
Lead certified divers on Discover Local Diving experiences
Teach Emergency First Response programs after successful completion of an Emergency First Response Instructor course
What do I need to start?
PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or qualifying certification from another training organization, and PADI Rescue Diver certification or qualifying certification from another training organization.
Medical clearance signed by a physician
20 logged dives
Be 18 years old
What will I do?
Learn dive leadership through classroom and independent study sessions
Complete water skills and stamina exercises in confined and open water
Training exercises to test organizational and problem solving abilities
An internship or series of practical training exercises
The PADI IDC program is your final step in the quest to become a PADI Instructor. The IDC is simply a combination of the AI and the OWSI (described below). Normally these two courses are taken at the same time, and we call this the IDC.
During the IDC, You'll learn to use and adapt the PADI System of diver education to individual student needs. Comprehensive training, supported by a wide variety of PADI educational materials, earns PADI Instructors respect from both students and peers.
The PADI Assistant Instructor course is the first portion of the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC). You'll not only gain additional experience as a PADI Professional but You'll also start learning the PADI System of diver education.
What can PADI Assistant Instructors do?
Teach academic presentations under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
Evaluate Open Water Diver surface skills under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
Teach the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty course
Teach Project AWARE Specialty courses
Conduct PADI Discover Scuba experiences
Teach Emergency First Response after successful completion of an Emergency First Response Instructor course
What will I need to start?
PADI Divemaster rating or qualifying certification from another certification organization
At least 18 years old
Have 60 logged dives, including night, deep, and navigation dives
Have been a certified diver for at least 6 months
What will I do?
Knowledge development through self-study, quizzes, lectures and presentations
Confined water skill review and assessment, workshops and presentations
Open water workshops, rescue assessment and candidate presentations
How long will it take?
The course can vary from as little as three days to more than two weeks. It is also the first four days of the IDC along and most people do this course as part of the IDC package.

What can PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors do?
PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors may conduct a broad range of PADI programs from Discover Scuba to Divemaster. The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor rating sets you apart from the crowd. PADI Instructors may conduct the entire range of PADI programs - from Discover Scuba through Divemaster. PADI Instructors do things others can only daydream about. What do I need to start?
PADI Assistant Instructor certification or be an instructor in good standing with another training organization for at least six months (check with Bent for qualifying credentials.)
Hold a dive certification for at least six months
Have 60 logged dives that include night, deep and navigation dives
Proof of CPR training within the last 24 months
Medical clearance signed by a physician
What will I do?
Knowledge development through self-study, quizzes, lectures and presentations
Confined water skill review and assessment, workshops and presentations
Open water workshops, rescue assessment and candidate presentations
Have at least 100 logged dives prior to entering a PADI Instructor Exam
How long will it take?
Five days, just after the AI portion of the IDC course.
PADI Emergency First Response Instructor Course (EFRI)
Emergency First Response Corp., a PADI corporate affiliate, offers the Emergency First Response CPR and first aid program.
What can I do?
As an Emergency First Response Instructor, you can conduct Emergency First Response Primary (CPR) and Secondary Care (first aid) courses.
What do I need to start?
Emergency First Response and Care For Children certification or qualifying certification from another certification organization
What will I do?
You'll learn how to conduct the Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR) and Emergency First Response Secondary Care (first aid) courses and Care For Children. You’ll also learn to conduct the recommended Automated External Defibrillator (AED), emergency oxygen and conscious choking management skills.
How long will it take?
The Emergency First Response Instructor Course takes approximately eight hours.
